5 Effective Ways to Keep Students Engaged in Virtual Classrooms

COVID-19 has forced schools to conduct virtual classes to ensure students’ progress towards learning and education doesn’t stop. But with online lectures come significant challenges, and it is essential to address the issues faced by students during learning. Virtual classrooms offer numerous benefits, but they also come with significant challenges, such as lack of engagement between peers and teachers. Therefore, the best school in Dehradun, The Heritage School North Campus, is sharing five ways by which virtual classrooms can become more engaging and interactive.

1. Break the Ice

Create a fun and engaging atmosphere at the starting of the course or semester so that students feel connected to the class and you (as a teacher) by offering some simple ice breakers. You can either ask students to pair up and interview each other or ask students to choose their favorite color.

2. Foster a Community

A sense of belongingness to a community is vital for effective communication and forming connections with each other during and outside the class. Students feel more engaged when they feel they are a part of the larger group or something bigger than themselves. Creating a community structure such as message boards, where they can share what they feel about each other can be helpful.

3. Create Individual Learning Plans

One of the benefits of virtual classrooms is that it offers individual learning plans based on competency-based learning methodology in which student’s performance is assessed by determining what type of learning they respond to and discovering the holes in their knowledge. Teachers can make use of individual learning plans by incorporating technology in education to track each student’s performance.

4. Integrate Face-to-Face Virtual Interactions

A big downside of virtual classrooms is isolation, which can quickly lead to disengagement. Online educators should combat isolation by encouraging or adopting virtual face-to-face interactions such as by recording video lectures or communicating via video conference.

5. Solicit Feedback

The best way to know whether your students feel engaged is by soliciting feedback at the end of the lecture. One can do so by creating anonymous polls that allow students to let you know how effective and engaging the learning materials are. This is a great way to assess if a topic needs more discussion, what types of assignments they want, and if anything needs to be changed at the end of the class.

A premier CBSE school in Dehradun, The Heritage School North Campus, believes that engaging students during virtual classrooms can significantly impact student’s learning and growth in this time of COVID-19.

Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development

Piaget’s theory of cognitive development was developed by Jean Piaget, a psychologist who became famous for creating his scientific theory about the intellectual development of children. According to Piaget’s theory, cognitive development is not a steady process, but rather the child develops in leaps and bounds. The best school in Dehradun, The Heritage School North Campus, embraces the child’s intellectual curiosity, creativity, strengths, and interests combined with Piaget’s theory. Let’s dive deeper into the stages of cognitive development of a child.

Stage 1: Sensorimotor Stage

The sensorimotor stage allows people to learn to differentiate objects with an existence out of the individual’s perception. The core idea for this stage is object permanence.

Stage 2: Pre-operational Stage

In the pre-operational stage, children start to develop imagination, and things can start having more meaning. Their thinking begins moving towards symbolical stages.

Stage 3: Concrete Operational Stage

At this stage of concrete operational, the child starts showcasing logical or operational thought, and the thought patterns continue to be rigid. Children begin to understand their thoughts, feelings, and ideas are unique, and at this stage, the diminishing of egocentric thinking starts taking place.

Stage 4: Formal Operational Stage

The final stage, i.e. formal operational stage in a child’s cognitive development, is the ability to increase logical thinking, understanding abstract ideas, and using deductive reasoning. This stage doesn’t end as one continues to gain new knowledge and experience long into adulthood.

Based on Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, the ideas have been applied in classrooms dealing with young children, but the views and concepts at play can tell a lot about training and development in more general. One can make use of props and other aids to support the learning of the child in the earlier stages of development and then combining actions with words as it is especially important to keep things short and simple. Teachers and educators need to be conscious of the importance of understanding different experiences people have, and students might occasionally need assistance to ascribe different meanings to words and situations.

The CBSE school in Dehradun, the Heritage School North Campus, aims to nurture the child’s cognitive development and enhance their uniqueness.

Asset-Based Instruction and Strategies for Teachers in the Classroom

In today’s world of increasing complexity and ambiguity, especially during the COVID-19 crisis, teachers and educational institutions should become vision-oriented towards the development of youth and the future of the nation, i.e. children. Schools should devise their curriculum in a way that every single student can make the best use of his/her strengths and reach the fullest potential. The world is becoming more complex day by day, and the problems are becoming more difficult not only in the context of solving them but also tougher than ever to identify the existing problems accurately in the current systems. To develop a student’s mindset, CBSE School in Dehradun, The Heritage School North Campus, makes use of a robust and systematic approach of instruction like asset-based teaching. But what is asset-based teaching?

Asset-based teaching unlocks students’ potential by focusing primarily on their talents and strengths to build a foundation for gaining new skills fluidly. This teaching method respects the diversity of students inside the school, including the thoughts, culture, and traits of every student. The asset-based approach to education eliminates deficit thinking and harmful biases that hold back students. Teachers are trained to look at diversity and differences as attributes to be celebrated and respected rather than things to overcome.

Teachers try to understand students by knowing what they already know; not just what they don’t know. The most organic learning builds on students’ existing knowledge and seeing them through the eyes of capable learners who can learn and do anything in this world. Great teachers embrace differences in the classroom, and an asset-based approach is central to achieve equality and to give all students the education they deserve.

Asset-based instruction makes use of effective strategies in the classrooms, such as:

1. Building relationships with partner classroom so that educators share power, time, and resources for mutual benefit.

2. Teachers start with questions or Socratic questioning rather than assertions during planning and learning experiences.

3. Enlighten students about the potential warning signs of a deficit mindset and help in strategizing ways to flip the paradigm.

4. Fostering change-makers and problem-solvers mindset emphasizing learning from and with

leading to better solutions in their communities.

The Heritage School North Campus is the best school in Dehradun that provides a nurturing environment with skilled, motivated, and dedicated teachers and support staff for the overall development of children preparing for the future.

How COVID-19 Could Change How We Educate in Future

Coronavirus-related disruption has made educators and teachers rethink how to impart education. As in these crucial times, technology has stepped in to rescue the education sector and shall also continue to play an important role in the years to come. Knowledge has become a click away, and educators also need to adapt accordingly.

World War II was the last time when so many countries around the world saw schools and educational institutions go into total lockdown. While we all know that the impact of this virus will be extensive, what would it mean for the long term for education?

The majority of the students in the present scenario are from generation Z, meaning a generation which has grown in a fully globalized economy, and the teachers belonging to a generation of baby boomers. Therefore there is a generation gap but letting it undermine us is only going to hinder the process of learning.

The COVID-19 crisis has changed the global outlook, and as the best school in Dehradun, we have discussed below how education needs to adapt to better prepare the younger ones for the future. These lessons include:

Educating Citizens in an Interconnected World

This pandemic has only taught us how globally interconnected we are and has just proved that there is no such thing as isolation actions and issues. The key is to navigate across boundaries and understand the interrelatedness and also work collaboratively.

Redefining the Role of the Educator

The role of the educator should not be just limited to imparting education and facilitate young people’s development but also to contribute as active members of society. The idea of an educator only being a knowledge-holder who imparts wisdom to his pupils doesn’t deem fit in the present scenario.

Teaching Life Skills Needed for the Future

Young people require resilience and adaptability-skills that have proved to be essential to navigating effectively through this pandemic. In the coming future, employers are searching for skills like creativity, communication, collaboration along with emotional intelligence.

Unblocking Technology to Deliver Education

The educational institutions across the world are all of a sudden compelled to embrace and harness the advantages technology has to offer. They have utilized the technological tools to create content for remote learning for their students. The Heritage School North Campus, a visionary CBSE school in Dehradun, understands the significance of how technology is working to break the barriers for the education sector in this epidemic.

Cool Tips to Instill Play in Learning

Schools in Dehradun CBSE

Learning is something that must be a constant process and must never cease. It is the quest for learning that keeps an individual growing. But what to do if the young minds run away from embracing the process of learning? After all, education and learning cannot be kept away to make the kids happy. The answer lies in instilling a fun-element in learning. It is this dose of fun that helps convert the task of learning, which seems monotonous and boring to children, into something gripping and interesting.

The Heritage School North Campus, frequently listed among one of the best CBSE schools in Dehradun, would like to share with you some cool tips that you can practice at home to keep the kids engaged and interested in learning.

Include easy & simple games

Easy playing games are always the best method to begin and blend games into learning. It keeps your child followed with their lessons without making them recognize the same.

Encourage memory games

Memory games are ideal to keep your child’s concentration level managed. During the current times, when kids are spending all of their time within the four walls of their homes, they tend to become bored and annoyed. Memory games help the kids have a good time with other family members. It not only helps to strengthen the family bond but also keeps the brain engaged in something productive.

Introduce games that enhance the analytical ability

Riddles, puzzles, etc. are excellent for properly keeping the brain functioning. To instill the habit of rational thinking, you can keep your child engaged with the riddles and puzzles. Besides enabling the kids to think rationally and solve problems analytically, these games offer fun and amusement.

Allow children to use their imagination

Give your kids a few alphabets and ask them to frame as many words they can think of from these alphabets. This will help them learn new words enriching their vocabulary, and will also keep them engaged productively. Learning words and their meanings would become easier than ever with these word-making games that offer enough fuel to keep the imaginative block of the brain pursued.

We, at The Heritage School North Campus, ranked among the top CBSE schools in Dehradun, believe that education and learning must be seamless processes, and a sudden break along its course might result in severe backlogs that the young minds might struggle to cover up in the long run. It is hence important that the process of learning is kept constant, but at the same time, it is important to ensure that this process remains natural and fun-filled with no space for any stress or worries.

Essential Elements of an Ideal Home Learning Environment

Learning is a continuous process, and ideally, should never be a momentary involvement between the learner and a textbook. To that end, nature is the best teacher we all have, and it is through the environment.  It is the right environment that can morph all the possibilities into reality. It is hence important that even when your child is learning at home, you try to create a learning environment that supports your little one to think, learn, analyze, grow, and criticize beyond any prejudices.

The Heritage School North Campus, frequently listed among one of the best CBSE schools in Dehradun brings you a list of the key elements that are considered indispensable for creating a wholesome home learning environment for your kids.

Keep the environment collaborative

If you want your child to learn and come up with innovative ideas, you have to turn the home environment from critical to candid. Encouragement and a simple pat on the back can sometimes do the magic and instill the desired level of focus and learning enthusiasm in your child.

Lead by example

If you want your child to consult a dictionary, go through the atlas, or pick up storybooks for spending spare time, lead them by setting examples. Studies all over the world have revealed that young children tend to follow their parents almost to the level of imitation.

Recreate from learning

Knowledge and learning are dynamic processes and keep on altering with time. What remains unchanged is the spree to acquire more knowledge. And, this curiosity is the foundation of any learning. Set your home environment in a way that it encourages the kids to recreate from the ideas and notions they have learned from their daily lessons. Offer fun activities, interactive games, puzzles, etc., to your kids to let them enjoy the true essence of their learning.

At The Heritage School North Campus, one of the top CBSE Schools in Dehradun, believe that education can only be considered complete when it supports deep-rooted learning. We believe that every child is capable of doing more than just learning and remembering. This is why it is important that kids are offered the scope to apply their knowledge to make learning a part of their experience. And this experience remains incomplete unless the home learning environment is equally supportive and cherishing.

Tips to Improve your Child’s Focus

Any task done halfheartedly leads to poor results. As soon as the kids enforce this in life, nothing can keep them behind. The Heritage School North Campus, frequently listed among one of the best schools in Dehradun brings you a few tips to help in improving a child’s focus and concentration power.

Kids usually learn better when playing. Try to keep the tablets and mobile phones away from them for a while and turn to think games. Gadgets reduce the attention span of the observer, so make sure your kids are not glued to a blue screen all day long. Encourage them to solve crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. You can also play building blocks games like Lego or Jenga.

Set a Deadline

Setting a time threshold can help the child concentrate better. When the kids are aware of the fact that they have a limited period for a given task, they tend to function with more attentiveness. But ensure that the hanging deadlines do not hamper with the quality of the work.

Have Patience

At the end of the day, kids will be kids and sometimes kids can be a handful to deal with. Every kid functions at his or her own pace. If you feel that you and your child are not on the same page, try to meet each other halfway. Be extremely patient when dealing with toddlers and their impressionable minds.

Learning through Play

With schools shut down, millions of children are staying home in isolation. Learning has become a tough task in a time when children cannot get their eyes off of blue screens. The idea is to make them learn through play- something that can be fun for all ages.

The Heritage School North Campus, CBSE school in Dehradun, advises parents to help explore their children’s full potential and fully engage them in learning through fun-filled activities. Learning can be made fun in the following ways:

Movement Games

Parents can create a dance choreography to their children’s favourite songs, where each person performs a dance move and everyone else copies. This way, your child will be able to inculcate healthy leadership qualities.

Telling Stories

Tell your children a story from their childhood, and also ask your children to mention a story. Make up a new story together starting with “Once upon a time…” and everyone else adds a line.

Change the Object!

This game can be played by using different daily household objects like a broom, mops, scarves, etc. which can be used as fun props for games like role-playing. For example, place a broom in the centre of the room and pretend it is a horse or a microphone or even a guitar. It depends upon the imagination of the players.

Memory Game

It can be played by the first person saying, “When COVID-19 lockdown ends, I am going to… (e.g., go to the park)" and the second person adds to the first person, “When COVID-19 lockdown ends, I am going to the park… (e.g., visit my best friend)."

Singing

Singing songs to your baby can help them develop their mother tongue and also other languages. Play or sing a song, and the first one to guess it right becomes the next leader. Create a jam with your kid while brushing his teeth or washing his/ her hands.

Children’s habits are changing under present circumstances, so it is easy for them to get lazy and feel demotivated to try things but The Heritage School North Campus, one of the top CBSE schools in Dehradun, suggests that parents minimize their children’s screen time and indulge them in learning through fun-based activities.

Physical Distancing During the COVID-19 Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) as a pandemic in March 2020 and warned all the countries to plan and prepare for this outbreak. This disease has spread through communities in around 198 countries so far and has infected lakhs of people, with thousands of them becoming critically ill. As of now, we can see many countries have implemented social distancing as a preventive measure to minimize the spread of this contagious virus. The Heritage School North Campus, best School in Dehradun, believes if people maintain physical distancing, then the COVID-19 transmission can end soon.

What Is Physical Distancing?

Physical distancing is a way to minimize the transmission of the coronavirus from an infected person or contaminated area to another person. This method is implemented to keep up with treating those who need care, and fewer people get sick at the same time.

Depending on how many people in the region are sick, physical distancing methods can be different and may include:

Lockdown of schools, movie theatres, shops, restaurants, or places where there are mass gatherings.
Working from home and shutting down offices.
Not going outside the house.
Restrictions on public transportation, including buses, trains or taxis.
Not visiting stores unless necessary.

What To Do?

While the coronavirus is spreading, it is better to follow the guidelines provided by the government and local health officials such as:

Keeping your family and loved ones at home by staying away from others as much as possible to reduce the transmission of the virus, as people who look healthy can still spread the virus.
If one has to go out, make sure to maintain a distance of 1-2 meters away from people.
If you’re caring for someone who is infected with coronavirus, take all the recommended precautions as suggested by the healthcare services.

The Heritage School North Campus, top CBSE School in Dehradun, recommends everyone to maintain physical distancing until the outbreak ends.

Guidance for School Administration to Plan and Prepare for COVID-19

The guidance is intended for school administrators who oversee the daily operations of childcare programs to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among students and staff. The Heritage School North Campus best school in Dehradun aims to plan for the continuity of teaching and learning if there is community spread of COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by Coronavirus for which there is currently no vaccine available. The best way to keep people safe and healthy is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes it and stopping transmission of the virus through everyday practices.

The most important thing that the schools can do now is plan and prepare. So, we are sharing guidelines for schools that have not yet identified COVID-19 in their community.

Prepare Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs): Ensure that the EOPs include strategies to reduce the spread of infectious diseases such as seasonal influenza and emphasize common preventive actions for students and staff like staying home when sick, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, and washing hands often.

Information-sharing Systems: Schools and communities should develop information-sharing systems for day-to-day reporting and disease surveillance efforts to detect and respond to an outbreak by partnering up with local health officials.

Monitor Absenteeism: Review and monitor the absenteeism patterns at your school among both students and staff, and alert local health officials about a rapid increase in student and staff absenteeism. It is recommended to discourage the perfect attendance awards and incentives and determine what level of absenteeism will disrupt the continuity of teaching and learning.

Establish Procedures and Protocols: Ensure that the students and staff who become sick at school or arrive at school sick are sent back home and keep sick students and staff separate from other students and staff members.

• Perform Routine Disinfecting and Cleaning: One can prevent and kill the harmful microorganisms by cleaning frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and light switches with disinfectants and cleaners routinely. Also, provide disposable wipes to the students and staff to clean commonly used surfaces such as keyboards, desks, and remote controls.

It is advised to coordinate with local health officials to be updated with the latest information to share with the school community. The Heritage School North Campus is the top CBSE school in Dehradun that follows the guidance received from health officials.

Time Management for Exams

To reach the full potential in exams, one has to manage their time really well. Exams seem the most dreadful thing to a student as there is so much information to grasp and retain. Exams are fundamentally testing your ability to make the most of the time available to recollect the information from your mind and apply it where it is required the most.

The Heritage School North Campus, one of the top CBSE schools in Dehradun has gathered some top tips on how to finish your exam on time:

1. Perfect Your Writing

One of the worst things about exams is the ache you get in your arm, wrist, and hand after intense writing. Choose your pens wisely as they can make a huge difference. Practice your writing ahead of exams so you don’t end up wasting your time perfecting your writing in the exam.

2. Don’t Waste Time

In exams, no one has time to waste, especially in language paper where you get essay questions. It is advised that don’t look here and there and just focus on your paper. Look down and focus on what you need to write.
Always make a point to visit the washroom before your exam reporting time as you would not want to waste time during the exam.

3. Practice Past Papers

Once you are thorough with the syllabus, find last year's question papers to solve. Set the timer and take mock tests. Mark the timings when you have completed the paper and how many questions are left (if any). The record will help you to know where you are lacking.

4. Make Plan

Once the question paper arrives, make sure you give a thorough read. Answer the question first which you know by heart. Ask for new scripts before you need them as it saves time and makes you panic less. Also never spend more than 7 minutes on essay-based questions.

5. Keep Track of Time and Divide it

Keep your watch to not lose track of time. Structure and divide your time in a way giving priority to the questions which carry the highest marks. Leaving early seems irresistible but sit and re-read what you have written. You would not want to realize that you have missed an important point or you wrote something wrong.

The Heritage School North Campus, CBSE school in Dehradun provides you with these efficient and effective tips for your upcoming final exams. Complete your exam on time and pass them with flying colours.
